MeMeTales Readathon 2012 Week 1 Animals

If you recall a week or so ago I shared with you that we were taking part in the MeMeTales and PBSKids Readathon 2012. Well it's the first week of the Readathon and it's time for me to share with you one of the first books. We are kicking it off with the theme of the week being ANIMALS! There were a few books on the MeMeTales app to choose from but right away one caught my eye. Five Little Ducklings.  It's a cute little counting story about a Mama duck and her babies. I knew right away how I could get both of my boys involved!

I had Mr. A (7 yrs old) read it to the little guy (9 months old) during bath time.  We acted out the story (more for the little one's benefit) with rubber ducks! If your kids ages fall somewhere in between my two it would be fun to have them use the rubber ducks to act out the story on their own, while you read it to them.

In addition to the MeMeTales books we are enjoying some other animal themed books in our house. We'd love it if you shared your favorite animal themed books with us in the comments too!

For the Big Kids
Our seven and nine year olds have recently enjoyed these books and series.

The Humphery Series by Betty G. Birney

The Puppy Place Series by Ellen Miles

Socks by Beverly Cleary

For the Babes
If you think nine months old is too young to be obsessed with books guess again. Books are one of C's favorite things right now. Specifically what I call the "In My..." series of board books by Sara Gillingham and Lorena Siminovich. We currently have In My Tree, In My Nest, In My Jungle and In My Pond. And there are more! These are the cutest little books, each featuring an animal and it's habitat and the animal is a finger puppet. The munchkin man loves it when I make the puppet move while I read the story.  I can not say enough good things about these books! He picks them out of his book basket every time on his own free will and EVERY time I read one to him he just lights up!

In keeping with the animal theme we took a trip to a wonderful nearby farm to see and feed some of the animals. This was the little guy's first trip to the farm. He loved feeding the goats! (It never gets old for big brother either). This picture of A and the goat cracks me up!

And those bunny's...ooohh I just wanted to take one home!

Don't forget the MeMeTales and PBSKid Readathon 2012 runs for six weeks (starting this week). Each week throughout the program I will be posting relative to the books and themes of the week. Be sure to check back!  If you haven't registered for the Readathon yet but would like to you can click here for more information. Each week your child participates and reads along you can print out a reward certificate via the MeMeTales Readathon website (use the link I gave you above). We love award certificates! Next week's theme is friendship.  I hope you will follow, and read along with us!

Come on and Follow us on Facebook and Twitter! You won't want to miss any of the fun!
We'd love to have you!

Disclaimer: I am receiving books each week free from MeMeTales.  In exchange I will be sharing with you the activities we do as well as ideas related to the theme of the week along with promoting this program.  My honest opinion is that it is a WONDERFUL program and we would be participating in this Readathon whether my blog was selected as a partner or not. (although I can also honestly say I'm thrilled that we were!).

  6. I've seen those "In My"...books before! They looked so adorable. I think one that we looked at had a ladybug on it. I love the pictures of you all with the farm animals, too. I just love it when their faces light up when they are face to face with an animal! :)

    1. Thanks Gina. I don't think the little guy knew what to make of the big "funny" looking animal licking mommas hand!
